Read Time: 2 minsMembers of McGlinchey’s Financial Institutions Compliance team will participate in multiple sessions during the upcoming Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance (LIRC) Conference, which will be held May 14-17 in San Diego.
On Wednesday, May 14, Jim M. Milano (Washington, DC) will participate in a session on “RESPA Section 8” during the Compliance Conversations Track. During this moderator-facilitated discussion, attendees can ask questions and exchange information to learn how peers are approaching RESPA Section 8.
On Friday, May 16, Jeffrey P. Barringer (Albany) will co-present “State Reporting Requirements and Evolving Licensing Issues” during the Emerging Issues Track. Jeff and his co-panelists will explore the intricate web of state reporting obligations, the dynamics of licensing requirements, and developing examination trends in the mortgage industry. They will discuss the current state of regulation and predictions in light of the changing federal landscape.
On Saturday, May 17, Sanford (Sandy) P. Shatz will co-present a Legal Ethics panel titled “All the President’s Men – An Examination of the Ethical Duties and Boundaries of Attorneys.” There are ethical lines that attorneys cannot cross in representing clients, but the lines have not always been clear. After a series of disbarments and criminal convictions of attorneys serving in presidential administrations, and various actions against attorneys in corporate America, the ethical lines are brighter. This session explores the duties attorneys owe to their clients and the public, and whether the ethical boundaries permit or prevent certain actions. Rules governing professional conduct, the responsibilities of lawyers in upholding the law, protecting public interest, and the consequences of attorneys’ actions (or inactions) are discussed.
