Michael H. Rubin of Baton Rouge has been named the LSU Law Center’s 2007 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Chancellor John J. Costonis announced the selection at the last meeting of the Law Center’s Alumni Board of Trustees. This award is given annually to the alumnus who exemplifies the highest quality and ethical standards of the legal profession and whose personal and professional achievements bring distinction to Louisiana and to the Law Center. Rubin will be honored at the Distinguished Alumnus Brunch on Saturday, November 10, at the historic Old State Capitol in downtown Baton Rouge.
Rubin is an attorney and a member of the management committee of McGlinchey Stafford, PLLC in Baton Rouge. Throughout his distinguished career, Rubin has been recognized by his peers as an outstanding leader. He currently serves as President of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and has served as President of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents (covering 17 state bar associations), the Bar Association of the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as the Baton Rouge Bar Association. Rubin is a nationally known public speaker, having given over 225 major addresses throughout the United States and Canada on a variety of topics, and is great demand on the public lecture circuit for his unique combination of legal insight, scholarship, and humor. In addition, for over thirty years, Rubin has served as an Adjunct Professor at the Law Center, teaching the course in real estate finance; his writings on the subject have been cited as authoritative by state and federal courts.
The author, co-author, and contributing author to eleven books and the author of over 30 articles in law reviews and legal publications, Rubin has been recognized nationally for his legal writing, having received both the Burton Award for Outstanding Legal Writing at the Library of Congress and the highest award given by the Atlanta-based Foundation for the Improvement of Justice for clarifying and simplifying the law.
Rubin serves on a number of national and international invitation-only legal groups, being one of only 50 U.S. attorneys elected to the international Anglo-American Real Property Institute. He serves as an elected member of the American Academy of Appellate Attorneys, the American Law Institute, and the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers, and has served on the Executive Council of the National Association of Bar Presidents.
Rubin’s father, the late Judge Alvin B. Rubin, was the first recipient of the LSU Law Center’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1986. Chancellor Costonis said: “Mike Rubin is one of the finest, most ethical lawyers I have had the privilege of knowing, and he is most deserving of this award. He is recognized nationally and throughout Louisiana as a legal scholar, and he is a leader in the community. Mike and his family are deeply devoted to the LSU Law Center. It is our honor to present this award to him.”
