The creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act has many thousands of companies in the consumer financial services industry watching and waiting to see how the CFPB’s far-reaching supervisory, rule-making, and enforcement jurisdiction will affect their businesses. Part I of this article examines the requirements that Consumer Response has imposed on companies to respond to consumer complaints and the statutory and regulatory authority, or lack thereof, for these requirements.
